Every museum without fail ended at the gift shop.
- Cleveland Museum of Art
- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
- Notre Dame
- Anheuser Busch Brewery (well, it ended at the bar)
- Gateway Arch
- Sun Studio
- Civil Rights Museum
- JFK Museum
- Buddy Holly Museum
- International UFO Museum
Why is this?
Was there a big convention of museum planners and they all decided “Our museums should end at the gift shop” ?
It’s interesting because you check out the museum, and if it’s curated well, the museum is engaging and gets you interested in its subject matter. After the exhibit, you’ll probably be more interested in the subject matter than you ever will at any point in your life. Then, you get to the gift shop and now have the opportunity to purchase more products related to the museum. Awesome. Yes, the JFK museum was interesting, I should purchase a book on the Warren Commission Report.
Magically, every museum knows how to get your money and leave you with a book that gathers dust on your shelf.
Some museums (Gibson Guitars, Buddy Holly, Graceland, Sun Studio) both start and end at the gift shop!
It’s all a conspiracy I say!
